French-Japanese Scientific Meeting on Neurobiology of Diseases and Ageing

The seminar "Neurobiology of Diseases and Aging" took place on 24 March 2017 at the French Embassy in Japan. Eighteen French and Japanese specialists were present throughout the day, mainly from Inserm and Keio University, as well as from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Osaka University, and attracted close to 90 listeners including a majority of Japanese scientific experts in neuroscience and aging but also personalities from the institutional world, industry representatives and the media.

It showed the status of techniques for « narrow Artificial Intelligence », their potential and practical applications, as well as their societal and ethical implications. The symposium also aimed at highlighting synergies between Japan and France and identifying future promising collaborations.

2nd French-Japanese Conference on Innovation in Ophtalmology

The Second French-Japanese Conference “Innovation in Ophthalmology” organized by the scientific department of the French Embassy in Tokyo and the Institut de la Vision in Paris took place during the International Society for Eye Research Meeting (2016, Tokyo) and just after the International Symposium on Retinal Degeneration (2016, Kyoto) in an attempt to promote French-Japanese collaboration in science and innovation. This event was part of the agenda of the France–Japan Year of Innovation that aimed at gathering academia and industry experts from both countries to foster multidisciplinary and translational exchanges.

Toward an international laboratory between France & Japan on Photochemistry

The purpose of this event was to define research guidelines and new cooperation subjects in order to create an international laboratory on photochemistry. Indeed, light is used in various fields, including chemistry and materials sciences where it allows for example the discovery of new materials with innovative properties or new molecules. This seminar was held within the context of the French-Japanese innovation year that had been launched on October 5th, 2015 by the two countries’ Prime Ministers Shinzo Abe and Manuel Valls. Its purpose was to offer a framework to the cooperation between France and Japan in order to strengthen innovation in science and technology, as innovation is both a motor for our economies and a way to solve the greatest issues of our society.

EU-Japan Symposium on 5G

February 8&10, 2016 - Tokyo, JAPAN


The symposium, held on 8 and 10 February at the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, brought together nearly 250 people and gave a comprehensive overview of the issues related to 5G. This event has shown that 5G is not a single technological field, but rather a combination of technological solutions. Japan, in order to be able to set up demonstrators for the Olympic Games, has instead focused on improving the performance of networks. Europe, for its part, insists on the development of 5G adapted to its major vertical industries. The combination of these approaches through international collaboration on the one hand and collaboration between public and private actors on the other hand is essential.
